Site Ethics
This page intends to discuss the design, motivation and goals of the Liverpool Amnesty website
Origin & purpose
| Originally conceived to be a site for the Liverpool Amnesty Student Group, the websites main purpose was to create a professional web-space that was easily accessible to members, and non-members alike, both to spur and co-ordinate group activity and arouse wider interest. It was later decided that it would further the websites aims, and encourage co-ordination with other groups in the area if the Student exclusivity element was dropped, whence the website moving from being 'Liverpool Student Amnesty' to simply 'Liverpool Amnesty' intending for all groups in the order to contribute and co-ordinate through the website. As such the primary aim of this site is to significantly increase the productivity of networking between Liverpool area Amnesty groups. |
Current Version
| At present the website is in its 'Version 1 beta stage', and will continue to maintain its beta status for the fortnight proceeding its first uploading on the server. This will allow for any major changes to take place according to unforeseen trials once the website is officially available for download and to co-ordinate and update all necessary content. Once out of beta stage, suggestions made for improving the site will have minimal impact upon this version and instead will be noted in preparation for the currently work in progress Version 2. Version 1 is intended to have a lifespan no longer than 3 months from initial launch. |
Site Content
A loose set of guiding principles has been laid out as to what should be displayed on this site and how each part is intended to work. Homepage – the leading image and the 'Human Rights in the News' section is intended to alert people to news articles in leading news sources to Human Rights related issues. At present the primary source of articles used is from the BBC, Independent and Guardian websites, as it is felt that these sites provide the most intellectually valuable and impartial news articles in the mainstream media. From time to time, or if suggested articles from other sources may also appear. Links to sites such as Amnesty, New Statesman etc have not been included as they represent a more refined audience as opposed to more mainstream media, although their intellectual quality is regarded as just as high as the aforementioned sites. The updates on the left below the Amnesty Candle are intended to alert the browser to updates within the site, important links to local actions and also Amnesty related events further afield than the Liverpool area. The 'Local Group News' sections is intended to include the latest news and events in the local area and intends to try include at least one representation from each of the local groups. At present these are identified as Liverpool Student Amnesty, Liverpool Amnesty, Southport Amnesty & Ormskirk Amnesty. If you are part of a group that is not included in that list and would like to promote your group and its actions please email us. Forum - the forum is a proboard, which is a forum that is hosted for free. However this does mean it includes advertisements. The forum is intended for people to contact and discuss any issues without having to wait for them to be updated on the website, and is especially useful for urgent calls. It is encouraged that all users of the site join and gain a habit of regularly using the forum pages. Campaign – this page relates to the ten identified leading campaigns of Amnesty International UK and is intended to contextualise and stimulate local actions. It allows groups to find out what others are doing and either share their workload, stimulate and suggest ideas or concentrate on campaigns that are not being focussed upon. Events related to the campaigns will also cross into the Action pages and the Social pages. Action – this page chiefly provides the latest information about forthcoming actions as well as how to get involved. It also intends to include follow ups to the action, with write-ups and images to allow people to see how the action was organised and carried out and also to lead on to other actions that build on successful ones. At represent this page includes a widget from the Amnesty site which is updated by Amnesty on current actions on a wider scale, although this is intended to stimulate local interest and be used by non-Amnesty browsers rather than to guide the actions planned by local groups. Articles – the articles page is for getting people to write, either about their experiences with Amnesty or on other issues related to Human Rights. There is no topical marker other than it would need to be Amnesty related. All articles submitted in this way will be checked for approval by at least 3 people before being uploaded to the site. The main aim here is to allow people to relate their Amnesty experiences and as such feel closer to the organisation. It is not intended to host external links to articles and is chiefly intended for the work of local Amnesty activists. Social – this page serves as the equivalent of the Action page but for social events and fund-raisers. socialising can be an important part of allowing people to interact within groups and thus form more productive unit when it comes to demonstrations and campaigning. Everyone has at least one common interest, and that is Amnesty, and it is intended that these pages will allow people to share their experiences on the lighter side of Amnesty's work. Contact – this page lists contact details for groups in the local area, so that people can identify and become part of the local Amnesty action without having to wait and turn up to a random meeting. No contact details will be uploaded here unless by the express request of someone so if you want to be contacted then please contact us! Links – this is a simple page linking to groups either related to Amnesty or Human Rights. Contact us if you would like a link added here. |
